Meds Finder

From The Mayor's Office...

Throughout the next two to three weeks, many of our young people will be leaving for college. Some for the first time; others to conclude course requirements which will lead to undergraduate and graduate degrees. My associates on the Village Board join me in wishing them a safe journey and a most productive year. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our young people and look to them as our ambassadors to the many cities, towns and villages throughout the country which will be their temporary homes.

This week marks the arrival of Adelphi's Class of 2012 onto the Garden City Campus. It gives me pleasure to welcome the students and to compliment them on choosing Adelphi. The Board of Trustees and I wish President Scott, his faculty and staff as well as the Class of 2012 and all students a most productive year.

The Village wants you to consider Garden City your home away from home during the next four years. Don't forget to visit our shopping areas and many fine restaurants on Seventh Street, Franklin Avenue and New Hyde Park Road; bring your friends and family, all are welcome.

Through the kindness of an interested Village resident, I am sharing the following information on what is recommended to be done with your unused pharmaceuticals. Most importantly, do not flush them as they reemerge as trace contaminants in the environment.

According to the most recent federal guidelines issued by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) on the proper disposal of prescription drugs, unused, unneeded and expired prescription drugs should be removed from their original containers and placed in the trash.

To prevent accidental poisonings or potential drug abuse the ONDCP recommends mixing the meds with an undesirable substance such as coffee grounds and placing the mixture into a sealable plastic bag prior to placing them into the trash.

In recent weeks our Village has sustained several rain/thunder/lightening storms, a few of which have been severe. The Village Department of Public Works' aggressive preventative maintenance program of scheduled catch basin cleaning, inspections and when necessary, replacement, has had a meaningful result in eliminating street flooding on the majority of Village roadways. I wish to also thank the many residents who had assisted the Village by removing leaves and twigs from the storm drain inlets. It really did make a difference during periods of heavy rainfall. I encourage our residents to not get complacent in keeping your family safe during these storms.

During a thunderstorm, each flash of cloud to ground lightening is a potential killer. Many injuries caused by lightening happen during recreational and work related outdoor activities. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance, seek safe shelter immediately. Safe shelters include a house, large building or car. Avoid open spaces and do not use trees or other small buildings in open areas as shelters. If you are involved in a recreational activity and are asked to leave the open space, please do so immediately.

Beginning September 15, 2008, the Village will begin issuing Railroad Parking Permits for the year 2008/09. The annual fee is $100.00 (this equates to approximately $.40 per day).

Permits may be obtained at the Village Business Office, 351 Stewart Avenue. Residents who already possess a 2007/08 permit will receive a renewal application by mail which may be returned to the Village either by mail or in person. A photocopy of your registration MUST accompany your application and check. Current permits will be valid through September 30.

During September, the Board of Trustees meet once a month. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, September 11th at 8:00 p.m.

The Mayor's Committee Report on St. Paul's which was presented at the July 17th Board of Trustees Meeting has been posted on the web-site along with three appraisal reports. There is also a link that can be accessed in which you can write a comment to the Mayor and Board of Trustees with regard to the report. The Village web-site address is www.gardencityny.net Copies of the report are also available at the Reference Desk of the Library and at the Business Office at Village Hall.
