Managing meds...

Erie County Medical Center has completed installation of a $1.2 million electronic system designed to reduce medication dispensing errors.

The bedside medication verification (BMV) system uses barcodes and portable scanners at the bedside level, in tandem with an electronic system from the pharmacy and the unit-based medication cabinets.

"This is a tremendous safety initiative to prevent medication errors," she said. "The system also allows us to have audits, and our management team will look at those. It will show us the near-misses and if we see a trend, we can go back to the nurse and see the workflow or a pattern of their work that we might have to re-educate them on. It's very preventative."
